My first experience one Thursday morning at the book nook was very quiet, just a handful of people remaining after breakfast...and I simply went from table to table, carrying a book of my choice, and asked if anyone would like to read with me...offering to read to them or together. I told them about the book nook, encouraging reading and other small talk. It was a good start for me. I arrive there, asking God to guide and to be with me because -- talking to complete strangers isn't the easiest thing for me to do. I'm expecting each week will be different, so I'll not do it alone. I need Him!
What I'm sensing is that the "book nook" is not just about books and reading. It's about approaching the visitors to The Bridge and being their friend and talking with them...and eventually reading. In some cases, the reading may come first and then the friendship. I'm seeking the Holy Spirit's leading in this area as that's all we can do if we're serving for Him.
- Volunteer, Lou
Lou has been a real blessing to this ministry. She has grown so much from a 'behind the scenes helper' (Lou and her sister are Wednesday 'regulars' in the kitchen) to one of the initiators of the "Book Nook" ministry. The idea for the Book Nook came out of our literacy tutor training time. Both Lou and another volunteer Dorcas were moved by the fact that many households in our city lack reading materials. They made it their mission to collect Christian literature, acquire book shelves, comfy chairs and a lamp and carve out a reading corner at The Bridge. I have been so encouraged to see how this ministry has been an invitation for people to sit down with a book and a coffee and just read. I have also been encouraged to see Lou venturing out to minister a living Christ to our brothers and sisters here with an ever present smile on her face. Praise God!
